Economy and Pool Operations September 2009
For more than two years now the economy has seen many downturns in real estate and the job market as well as employers scaling back their operations and training. This week the Federal Government indicated that we are moving forward and upward toward the better. Let’s hope this is fact. This may be the case but as with all other considerations many feel we have a ways to go before we start feeling good about our economy. This brings about the need for continuing our efforts to train competent swimming pool and spa operators. Businesses in the pool and spa industry must maintain the quality of water and prevent accidents to stay in compliance with local, state and federal regulations no matter what the shape the economy is in.

Pool & Spa operators are faced with many challenges when it comes to maintaining pool and spa facilities. Good educational programs are in place to help operators and owners maintain good quality and services to their customers and stay in compliance. The Certified Pool Operator (CPO) program offered by certified instructors from NSPF is one such program to help operators and owners operate their facility with certified operators. Their comprehensive program has been in use for many years and is the most recognized certification program in the world.

A good trained operator can reduce the number of incidents a facility may experience compared to a facility that has no trained personnel on site. There are many other benefits of having a trained operator for your business.

To summarize in the face of our ongoing economy businesses are still required to maintain the quality of water for their customers that meet local, state and federal health requirements and building codes.

CDC updates AFR procedures  January 30, 2008

See entire CDC document.

Importance of training
In today’s market many businesses are demanding an ever increasing number of certified pool and spa operators to manage their public water facilities. Insurance and liability costs are high not to mention the costs associated with running a public water facility. Businesses recognize that having properly trained and knowledgeable employees working at their facilities have fewer issues involving water chemistry, equipment failures, accidents or worse, liability issues.

Many states have mandated by law and local regulations that a person maintaining a public water facility used for recreation purposes must have a certified pool and spa operator on site during hours of operation. Many more states will be passing legislation that will require pool and spa operator certification. Many health departments recognize a good trained pool and spa operator is less likely to have problems with their facility than someone who hasn’t been trained.

Property owners such as large hotel chains or apartment complexes are requiring their maintenance staff be trained and certified before being allowed to service their pools or spas and in some cases it has been reported that in order to hold your position you must receive proper training.

It is always best to check with your local health department and check if you are in one of these states that require certification and if not when do these states plan to mandate certification.
